چکیده

Tensile viscous flow is explored as a forming method for metallic glasses in their supercooled liquid temperature region. Bulk amorphous preforms with nominal alloy composition Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 were produced by arc melting and tiltand suction casting into a copper mould. A simple loading rig, in which the preform is suspended from a wire, combined with selective heating of the section to be deformed, avoids the need for complicated loading grips. Different strategies are evaluated to attach the sample to the rig and to selectively heat the central part of the specimen. Finite element models were compared with experiments to verify the design of the induction heating coil and optimize process parameters. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements show that the material is glassy before and after deformation. The rapid decrease of flow stress with increasing temperature means that the process can be controlled thermally at constant load instead of mechanically at constant temperature. An asymmetric configuration, where the selective heating zone is moved relative to the specimen during the deformation, allows to form rods into wire by a steadystate process. The effect of deformation on induction heating under constant tension was found to be inherently self-stabilizing, reducing the need for precise process control. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Bulk metallic glass composite with good tensile ductility, high strength and large elastic strain limit

Bulk metallic glasses exhibit high strength and large elastic strain limit but have no tensile ductility. However, bulk metallic glass composites reinforced by in-situ dendrites possess significantly improved toughness but at the expense of high strength and large elastic strain limit. Here, we report a bulk metallic glass composite with strong strain-hardening capability and large elastic stra...

A Cooperative Shear Model for the Rheology of Glass-Forming Metallic Liquids

2.1 Abstract A rheological law based on the concept of cooperatively sheared flow zones is presented, in which the effective thermodynamic state variable controlling flow is identified to be the isoconfigurational shear modulus of the liquid. The law captures Newtonian as well as non-Newtonian viscosity data for glass-forming metallic liquids over a broad range of fragility. Acoustic measuremen...

Time-Temperature Superposition of Structural Relaxation in a Viscous Metallic Liquid

Bulk metallic glass-forming Pd40Ni10Cu30P20 has been investigated in its equilibrium liquid by quasielastic neutron scattering. The quasielastic signal exhibits a structural relaxation as known from nonmetallic viscous liquids. Even well above the melting point, the structural relaxation is nonexponential and obeys a universal time-temperature superposition. From the mean relaxation times avera...

Effect of Applied Stress on the Mechanical Properties of a Zr-Cu-Ag-Al Bulk Metallic Glass with Two Different Structure States

In order to investigate the effect of applied stress on mechanical properties in metallic glasses, nanoindentation tests were conducted on elastically bent Zr-Cu-Ag-Al metallic glasses with two different structure states. From spherical P-h curves, elastic modulus was found to be independent on applied stress. Hardness decreased by ~8% and ~14% with the application of 1.5% tensile strain for as...

Localized crystallization in shear bands of a metallic glass

Stress-induced viscous flow is the characteristic of atomic movements during plastic deformation of metallic glasses in the absence of substantial temperature increase, which suggests that stress state plays an important role in mechanically induced crystallization in a metallic glass. However, it is poorly understood. Here, we report on the stress-induced localized crystallization in individua...
